Is It Right To Push your opponents?

If your players can stop the goals scored against them – they can’t lose the match. Exercises in this session develop players’ ability to put pressure on an opponent, “close touch” and eventually regain possession.

When you train players to attack, it is important to give players the freedom to let your team have an element of surprise. However, when you train in defense, it’s the opposite. Defenders need clear, simple “do it and it will happen” instructions to make sure all players are in a similar mind.

Examples of simple defense instructions you can say are:

  • “The nearest player presses the ball”
  • “Stand on your feet”
  • “Release attack”
  • “Force game away from goal”

Training the first session

Use the center circle of your pitch and up to eight players inside with braces at the back of the shorts so that it hangs like a tail.

The goal of this fun game is to steal the bibs of others and eliminate them from the game. The last player in the area with the bib is the winner.

In this simple game, players put pressure on opponents to steal their bibs and watch their backs, being careful about the danger.

How to develop it

Use the penalty box and goalkeeper and use two teams of four, as in the middle picture.

First, player 1 from the first team goes diagonally to player 2. Immediately after this pass, player 3 (opponent from the second team) runs from the goal to try to stop player 2 from shooting.

If player 3 wins the ball, he can score a point for his team by passing a teammate on the edge of the penalty area.

Second-team players (who are in opposite positions to the first team) take their turn. Make sure all players move in one position after each attempt and sum up the goals scored to see which team won.

Play a game

Check the box in the sections as shown in the bottom picture and add two target cells. Play a one-sided game.

Team A (a team with a total of four players) is attacking a big target and always has at least one player on each wide channel.

Team B (four players from the field and the goalkeeper) defends the big goal and tries to score two goals.

To start the game, you or the assistant passes the ball to team A. Players on this team can still use you or the assistant to pass the ball back. Team B defends inside to stop direct shots into the goal. Using this tactic will force team A to move to any wide channel.

When this happens, the nearest player of team B runs to defend against the wide attacker. If the ball falls out of the game or a goal is scored, start again with passing to team A. Rules for offside.

The game is played for four three-minute periods with a one-minute interval between each period. Swap players from the field in half and determine which team won by scoring the most goals.
